7 Ways Millennials are Changing the Workplace

By  |  0 Comments

People underestimate the power that millennials have in the workplace. There is a lot to learn from someone who is older but we are taking the workplace to another level and it has nothing to do with our age!

1. Millennials have different values that they carry with them into the workplace
Millennials were born between 1976 and 2001 and we are currently slaying  with a buying power of $1.68 trillion and an average household income of $60,000.  Our focus is more on happiness and self-discovery unlike baby boomers who focused on building a family and being safe and practical.  Values that we carry with us into the workplace also include passion, diversity, and sharing. Older generations missed the mark on these things and focused more on justice and duty.  Millennials make the workplace a more inviting place to work and employees are more open to sticking around when they are surrounded by leaders who care about inclusion and their happiness.
2. Millennials want to learn and grow with the company
If there is visible career progression we will work hard for you and we will stay. We value personal development so we are always seeking out opportunities to meet with key players in our companies.   We get out of our offices and we network and constantly take on new projects which allows us to move up the chain faster.  Hey now!
3. Millennials are tech savvy and have social media on lock
We are really excited about putting our creative talents to use in a way that a lot of more tenured employees may not know how. Millennials can change the way that a company runs its business. Millennials find ways to make a business run easier, faster, smoother, and more efficient. We do ask how can we make processes more efficiently without adding cost but we don’t see technology as a cost, we see it as a way to change the entire business in an amazing way.  What’s a hashtag you say? It’s how millennials will get you seen all around the world!
4. Millennials want to do new and exciting things for the company
Millennials are extremely ambitious and they want the company to excel and fast! We are good at selling, fundraising, recruiting, presenting, and a myriad of other things that we have up our sleeves. Don’t underestimate our abilities because we haven’t been at the company for several years; that’s what makes us great! We are a set of new eyes that can see what others may not want to or be able to see.
5. Millennials are the kings and queens of wanderlust
We are willing to relocate and travel if we are able to enhance our careers. A lot of Millennials have made the choice to have families and settle down later in life so we aren’t really tied down to one location. If an organization is looking to grow globally or already has stake in a more global arena then we are all over it because we love to travel and we really want to see the world and experience other cultures…and we can do it on the company’s dime you say? Sign us up!
6. Millennials are awesome at using programs that already exist to enhance how business is conducted
Forget spending hours on a plane to have a face-to-face meeting. Millennials don’t want to waste time doing a task a certain way when we know that we can complete it faster with the right type of technology. For some companies, the programs have always been there but no one really used them. I think I’ve used my outlook video conference option several times to speak to other Millennials but no one else ever wants to use it. Exploring video options has a positive impact on organizations. Maybe we can start using face time for one-on-one meetings next? No? I think it’s a great idea!
7.  Millennials bring the word engagement to another level
Engagement engagement engagement! Companies are so big on this….now. Millennials are motivated, excited, and energetic! We are huge on social interaction so we take time out of our days to learn about our employees. Most of us don’t have to work hard to be in touch with our employees because it comes so naturally. We have a different outlook on how we think a manager-employee relationship should be. We have the ability to engage in a way that is relatable to everyone without looking like we are trying too hard. We want to know how the kids are doing, how we can help employees develop, how well we are doing as their manager, or whether or not they want to know how to advance in their careers. We don’t wait until the mid year and annual review to speak to our employees we engage with them everyday!
There are nearly 80 million of us who are already in the workforce or who will be joining the workforce in a few years. We are hard-charging and super amped individuals who are always ready to take on any challenge you throw at us. We believe in cross training and we are coming to you with several hard and soft skills and we are willing to teach everyone what we know so that the business can leverage all employees in any situation. We understand the business and we want to make it better and easier to operate. We will continue to change how business, and perhaps the world, will look in the future and set our companies up for major global success.
