Cicely Tyson to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kennedy Center Honors

Living legend, Cicely Tyson has a career that spans over 50 plus years in film, television and theater. The legendary actress is going to receive the lifetime achievement award at the 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. Tyson, along with the musical group the Eagles, singer-songwriter Carole King, filmmaker George Lucas, actress and singer Rita Moreno, and conductor Seiji Ozwa are all set to be honored on Sunday, December 6, 2015. Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein said, “Our Honorees represent the voices, soundtracks, and stories of our personal lives and memories”, according to the Kennedy Center official website.
Tyson was born and raised in Harlem, the daughter domestic worker and a carpenter.  She was first discovered by a photographer for Ebony magazine. Her first acting role was on the NBC series Frontiers of Faith in 1951, which led to her first film “Carib Gold” in 1956. Tyson worked on work, such series such as East Side/West Side and the soap opera The Guiding Light. In 1972, she was nominated for the Academy Award for “Best Actress” and a Golden Globe Award for her performance as Rebecca Morgan in “Sounder” and won the NSFC “Best Actress” and NBR “Best Actress” Award. In 1974, she starred as the lead role in the “Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman”, which she won two Emmy Awards and was nominated for a BAFTA Award. Most recently, Tyson won the Tony Award for “Best Actress in a Play” for her performance as Miss Carrie Watts in The Trip to Bountiful at the 67th Tony Awards She also won the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Play” and the Outer Critics Circle Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Play”.
It is so inspiring to see a living legend gain accolades for the craft that she has perfected for half of a century.
