Oh, How Many Ways Atlanta Loves Toni Braxton

7-time Grammy Award Winning artist and icon, Toni Braxton performed LIVE in Atlanta, Georgia this week at the Fox Theatre. This show was sure to be one of the best tickets in town as fans anticipated knockout fashions, a fabulous presentation, and lots of audience engagement paired with stellar vocals. Of course we expected Ms. Toni Braxton to come home slaying!  However, to our surprise (and Toni’s) the city of Atlanta received all of that and MORE!

The night began with side-splitting laughter thanks to the very talented Bill Bellamy and followed with Toni’s opening number “He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me”. But what followed after her opening performance was simply unexpected.  First, a touching on-stage marriage proposal, than Toni acknowledges celebrity friends Angie Stone and Keith Sweat in the audience.  Soon after, Trina and Towanda Braxton, who often sing back-up to their big sis, told Toni there was a very special surprise for her.

The City of Atlanta presented Ms. Braxton The Phoenix Award, which is the highest and most prestigious honor for the city. The mayor, Kasim Reed also declared June 2nd, Toni Braxton Day! The award is an acknowledgement of her many career achievements and significant contributions to her home community. It was a beautiful moment with all of the Braxton sisters (Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar) along with their mother, Evelyn Braxton embraced in celebration.

As the night went on it seemed the surprises were endless as anticipation of what will happen next filled the atmosphere. Just when you thought the night couldn’t get any better, after showing a quick reel of Braxton Family Values (We TV), 3 of the 5 Braxton sisters took the Fox Theatre stage to perform solo. Trina with her dance anthem, “Party or Go Home”; Traci with her single “Last Call” from her Cash & Burn album; and Tamar with an impeccable vocal performance of “Love and War”.

Following the tag-team vocal slayage, Towanda led a Braxton-signature impromptu harmony of “Put Some Respek (On My Name)” as yet another surprise, Birdman, enters the stage. (If you’re lost at this point, Google will happily fill you in) Many took this surprise appearance as a confirmation of the many dating rumors that have been swirling around the two. The moment lasted about as long as Birdman’s infamous Breakfast Club interview.

Now, Toni Braxton isn’t known for doing too many covers, but this night she covered a little bit of “Between the Sheets” by the Isley Brother’s then mixed with Biggie’s “Big Poppa” and wowed the fans like it was all a dream performing one of her favorite Lil’ Kim’s raps!  (Complete with a strike of Kim’s signature pose) The energy in the room was indescribable! Another notable highlight was the moment Keith Sweat joined Toni on stage for the performances of songs like “Hurt You” from her album Love, Marriage, Divorce (with Babyface). The entire night was an experience, multiple fans had the opportunity to sing with the songstress on stage and even take a few selfies!

The set list did not disappoint, throughout the evening fans sung along to Breathe Again, Let it Flow, Just Be a Man About It, You’re Makin Me High, Seven Whole Days, How Many Ways, Spanish Guitar, You Mean the World to Me, I Heart You, I Wish, How Can an Angel Break My Heart and (my personal fave) Another Sad Love Song. A night such as this, calls for an encore and that, she gave.  Draped in a gorgeously shimmering part-sheer, part-white floor-length gown and gloves, Ms. Toni Braxton left us with her signature hit, Un-break My Heart. It was only fitting that this memorable day be dubbed Toni Braxton Day.
